Investigadores estadounidenses logran reproducir archivos de música que ocupan menos de un kilobyte.

Menos de un kilobyte. Este es el tamaño de un archivo digital de música creado por investigadores de la Universidad estadounidense de Rochester y que supone la reducción en más de mil veces en comparación con otros archivos en MP3. El hallazgo, aunque se trate de una grabación sencilla, abre la puerta también a la reproducción en el ordenador de los instrumentos que suenen incluso reproduciendo las características propias del objeto, así como la persona que lo esté tocando.

El archivo presentado en la conferencia internacional de Acústica y Procesamiento de Señales, celebrada en Las Vegas, reprodujo 20 segundos de un solo de clarinete. Ocupaba menos de un kilobyte, o lo que es lo mismo, alrededor de mil veces menos de lo que habría ocupado en el caso de que se guardase bajo formato MP3. “Es básicamente un sistema de reproducir música en imitación al ser humano”, asegura el profesor de Ingeniería Informática y Eléctrica y cocreador de la tecnología Mark Bocko.

A su juicio, tras encontrar “la menor cantidad de datos necesarios para reproducir una pieza de música”, se habría hallado también un traslado al mundo de los ordenadores de las capacidades humanas de mover rápidamente la lengua o los dedos e incluso respirar.

En este sentido, permite dos innovaciones: recrear en un ordenador la física real de un instrumento y las características físicas del instrumentista. Así, el equipo de investigadores ha desarrollado la reproducción de una persona que, virtualmente, se asemeja en la forma de respirar, el movimiento de los dedos e incluso la presión de los labios sobre la boquilla, en este caso del clarinete.

Los ingenieros de la Universidad de Rochester tratan también de reproducir el sonido más semejante posible al real. Aún así, “en la música con más notas sostenidas y conectadas, el método funciona bastante bien y es difícil diferenciar el sonido sintetizado del original”, explicó Bocko.

Una vez que se mejore el sistema, los investigadores confían en dotar a los músicos de un nuevo instrumento que les proporcione una forma de aprendizaje e imitación más intuitiva, mediante la observación de un homólogo virtual. En cuanto a la voz, existen previsiones de aplicación pero no hay un calendario todavía, ya que su traslación es considerablemente más compleja.

De momento, las intenciones pasan por perfeccionar los diminutos archivos para músicas de un sólo instrumento, pero quién sabe si pronto el ordenador será capaz de reproducir una orquesta e incluso un coro de voces de la forma más comprimida jamás vista.
